Traveling Solo with Kids Doesn’t

Have to Be Overwhelming

Whether you're a single parent, a military spouse, or just taking a solo trip with your little ones while your partner stays behind, traveling alone with kids comes with its own set of challenges, but it can also be incredibly rewarding. As a mom who’s been there, I know how important it is to plan smart, pack with purpose, and prioritize flexibility. This guide is full of realistic, judgment-free advice to help you feel prepared and empowered wherever your next adventure takes you.

Plan With Intention, Pack With Purpose

When you're the only adult in charge, your carry-on becomes your command center.

Make it count. Use packing cubes for kid outfits, bring one set of backup clothes for you too,

and don't underestimate the power of snacks, headphones, and familiar comfort items.

If possible, pre-load tablets or devices with offline games and shows.

Keep essentials like ID, meds, and wipes in easy-reach pouches.

And always plan for a little more downtime than you think you'll need.

Choose Destinations That Work With You—Not Against You

Look for places with reliable transportation, walkable areas, and family-friendly accommodations.

Resorts with included meals or kid-friendly amenities are a huge win. National parks with junior ranger programs,

all-inclusives with kid clubs, or even big-city trips with access to museums and aquariums can all be solo-parent goldmines.

Think about your energy too—this is your trip too, not just theirs.

Airport & Flight Tips When You're Outnumbered

Getting through TSA solo with kids can be stressful, but preparation goes a long way. Use curbside check-in when available, babywear younger kids, and keep documents handy. If flying with a lap infant, bring their birth certificate or passport. Request bulkhead seats for more space, or try to book early boarding. A collapsible stroller and easy access diaper bag or carry-on backpack can make all the difference at boarding and landing. If you have CLEAR, kids under 18 get to go through with you for free.

Mental Load Is Real, so Give Yourself Grace.

Solo travel with kids means you're the itinerary planner,

luggage hauler, snack provider, comforter, and problem solver all in one.

It’s okay to have moments that feel messy. Build in breaks for yourself and embrace flexible travel goals.

Whether it’s a slow morning in the hotel or skipping one activity in favor of a nap, success is measured in memories made, not perfection.
